Washington, D.C. Summit

April 6-9, 2027

Experience expert-guided tastings using the WSG Tasting Toolkit, neuro-sensory workshops and formative seminars. Connect in-person with your fellow educators and classmates.

Explore first impressions, texture, geometry, shape and salivation in wine tasting. Draw deeper connections from mouthfeel to terroir.

Explore and qualify acidities, sweetness, bitterness, salinities and umami through the lens of biology, neuroscience and tasting. Connect the dots with the "why" of what's in the glass.

Examine where aromas originate and how memory, language and cultural context shape aromatic description. Explore visual cues, common wine faults and the relationship between technical correctness and personal judgment.

Month 8
Integrate technical assessment with personal perception to develop a flexible, individualized tasting voice. Learn to adapt your language and conclusions to different audiences, intentions and styles of wine.

Integration & Reflection

September 2027

Revisit core themes from across the diploma and reflect on how your understanding of perception, communication and personal taste has evolved. Leave with a clearer sense of your tasting identity and how to keep developing it.

Additional Information

Each Unit (month) requires between 11-15 hours of study time, including:

  • 60-90 minutes of monthly live online instruction, offered twice on the same day to accommodate different time zones (recorded for those who can’t make it live)
  • 6 - 8 hours of eLearning content (online lessons, videos, additional readings, quizzes etc)
  • 1 - 2 hours of participating in online forums and written assignments
  • 2 - 3 hours of self-guided tasting exercises to be completed with wines available 

Unit 4 is entirely in-person and will take place April 6–9, 2027 in Washington DC. This includes four days of expert-led in-person seminars, tastings and workshops. All wines are provided. Attendance is required to complete the program and sit the final assessment.

Throughout the curriculum, you will learn to interpret what's in the glass by connecting your sensations to the terroir, viticultural and winemaking choices and their impact on the wine produced.

The WSG Tasting Diploma is designed for advanced wine students and professionals with strong foundational wine knowledge and meaningful tasting experience.

Students should already be comfortable with major grape varieties, regions, production methods, structural components, quality assessment and standard tasting vocabulary.

This course does not teach the basics; it builds on them. For more insight into the level of this program and to help you make more informed choices about your wine study path, see HERE.

SUMMIT, ASSESSMENTS AND FEES

Yes. Participation in the Diploma Summit is required. The Summit is a pivotal part of the program, bringing together guided tastings, practical workshops, community connection and the mid-term theory and tasting assessment.

There is no remote, virtual or alternative format for the Diploma Summit or the mid-term assessment.

AFTER COMPLETION

Upon graduating, you will receive:

  • WSG Tasting Diploma certificate (digital & printable)
  • WSG Tasting Diploma lapel pin (for purchase)
  • Access to the program’s global alumni community
